Vishnu Varshney, is considered as the Pioneer of venture capital industry in India. He was the founder and Managing Director of GVFL. Formerly known as Gujarat Venture Finance Limited, GVFL started in 1990 as a World Bank initiative.
GVFL is known for its significant value addition in making successful classic venture capital companies. Over a 19-year period, GVFL has made 67 investments in technology start up early stage companies, of which more than one-third have become very successful. Vishnu Varshney received recognition from the Asia Pacific Venture Capital Association for his significant contributions to the growth of Venture Capital and Private Equity in Asia. Prior to starting GVFL, he worked as General Manager at GIIC where he was instrumental in starting 6 large blue chip companies.
Vishnu Varshney also authored the seminal book, “Venture Finance in India,” and co-authored two additional books one on “SSI Technology” published by Tata McGraw Hill for SIDBI & Swedish Development Corporation and a “Hand book on Global Venture Finance.” He was the founder/Secretary of the Indian Venture Capital Association for three years and thereafter served as Chairman. Vishnu Varshney has served on the Board of Directors of several companies, and is presently on eight Corporate Boards. His public service included many committees appointed by Government of India and also is a former Chairman TiE, Ahmedabad, Chairman Indo American Chamber of Commerce, Gujarat, Member CII, FICCI and NASSCOM.
Vishnu Varshney received his B.Tech, from IIT Kanpur, MS and his MBA from Louisiana State University, USA. He was awarded Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities for overall achievements and Phi Kappa Phi (Academic Honour).
He also founded a non-profit organization for helping students for higher education in the U.S. for which the U.S. Government awarded a Certificate of Appreciation.
